HOW TO
Make everyone belongs™ Happen!
- Get on board! Become an official partner, donor, or friend of everyone belongs™.
- Get to know someone and find out what you have in common.
- Invite someone to join you in an activity you enjoy.
- Be natural - look people in the eye, smile and say hello.
- Speak up for the rights of all people.
- Take time to listen and learn.
- Ask questions about anything you're unclear about - myths and stereotypes thrive in the dark.
- Welcome all people into your neighbourhood.
- Welcome all children into your school.
- Talk to your children and other parents — work to promote a culture where everyone is known and where everyone belongs.
- Express your belief in the right of all children to be included in their neighborhood school.
- Express your opinions on the issue of inclusive education with individual schools, school boards, and elected trustees.
- Think outside of the box.
- Don't assume people's abilities. Take the time to find out what people can offer.
- Be open to shifting roles and responsibilities so that everyone can contribute their skills most appropriately and efficiently.
- Ask businesses if they support diversity and support those who do.
- Read John McKnight, John O'Brien, Robert Putnam, Jean Vanier, and others who understand and express the value of community and belonging.
- Be conscious of the language you use when speaking about someone. Emphasize the person first and the disability, age, ethno-cultural background, etc. only if necessary. If you don't know the acceptable term, ask.
- Donate financially to DDRC to continue the work of the everyone belongs™ social brand campaign.
- Volunteer your unique skills and talents to local non-profit, charitable organizations that support people.
- Share your story of inclusion with others.
