Program Achievements with CBE Area V for 2007-2008 School Year

In a time of continually tight budgets, our small but growing project has made a large difference in having "everyone belong" in their community schools by:

  • Building teachers repertoires of effective strategies for teaching special needs students.
  • Helping schools make a conscious choice and plan to include all students.
...deals with changing attitudes and beliefs, in both the school wide and classroom contexts.

Program Success: Climate Building for Inclusion

This area of concentration deals with changing attitudes and beliefs, in both the school wide and classroom contexts. We have made considerable progress in this area.

Accepting Differences and Identifying Learner's Profiles has grade six classes discussing diversity and differences with the theme that everyone belongs. Students completed Learner Modality and Multiple Intelligence surveys which identified their Learner Profiles. Students could identify their learning strengths and needs and were able to appropriately advocate for their specific needs in the class setting.

Leadership Group for 12 students identified by administration as having significant learning and behavioral challenges who were at "risk" for dropping out. All students became more engaged in learning and completed grade nine. They were motivated to make social change in their schools, learned new friendship skills and advocacy skills. A peer mentoring project will continue in the school in subsequent years. Trained in-house staff to follow this successful model.

Growth Plans for nine schools are addressing what they need to do about creating safe, caring and accepting climates for learning.

Professional Development days with staff at 2 schools have focused on developing empathy and emotional well being to support climates respectful of diversity and supportive of learning for all students.

Learning Styles group for grade 7 students to facilitate greater understanding into learning styles and create a peer group for a disenfranchised student
